Now before we go to creating tools to deal with Procrastination, we should put some light on why the negative habits do persist even when you don’t want them.
The information in the brain follows a certain path. The brain stops decision making once a habit is developed because the brain uses that part of the brain where energy is conserved and that is the comfort zone of the brain. Said in another way the brain uses entrenched pathways where the actions are automated and the brain doesn’t have to think. It’s an automatic stimulus and response.
The brain does not want to use the Pre-frontal Cortex because it is energy-sapping. It follows that path that keeps it safe from threats and pain.
That’s why Extrinsic Motivation or External Behaviors are not sustainable; given they are result-driven. The moment you stop getting the desired result you are back to square one.
Now the brain is totally incapable of distinguishing between a good habit and a bad habit. All it understands is that is needs gratification and it is looking for that.
The good news is that new habits can be shaped and designed. Once designed the old habits become dormant and easy to deal with if it shows up again.
